A reputable breeder usually does not breed those 10 females. Some will be too young to breed and are working on their championships. and growing out until they are 2 years old and can be tested. Some of those may fail and not be bred at all. Usually a good breeder will retire a female at 5 or 6 years of age. And will not breed every heat. So at most usually they will only get 3 maybe 4 litters if that many from each female before they are retired. Many breeders breed even less. So some of those 10 females are retired and having no more puppies. So considering, this breeder has 10 females. and the breed lives to 15 years old.
1-2 dogs will be too young
3-4 dogs will be breeding age
4-6 dogs will be retired.

Plus it is very expensive to breed good quality dogs. See some of the other posts to get an idea of the costs.

I agree with “Keep my soldier safe” as i show dogs and i have bought puppy’s that are the least 3,000 the max i have paid was 5,000.
I got their name from people with best in shows and champion dogs of my chosen breed.

I disagree with toy fox terrier a puppy mill has more than 200 dogs

most responsible breeders have 5 to 10 females and at least 2 to 4 males

If thery are not breeding purebred animals but the designer breeds, they are a puppy mill or at best BYB’s. If they have champions and selling dogs from champion lines they may be able to sell the pups, if not, probably not that many. Reputable breeders are lucky to break even. No matter how many dogs they sell.

There isn’t a huge number of reputable breeders with that many dogs. Usually people who breed so many puppies are well known among others involved with the particular breed and will get referrals from all over the country, and often even from foreign countries. Despite the fact that they sell so many puppies, these breeders aren’t making much profit, if any. Breeding dogs is just a hobby for them; their actual income comes from their day job.

edit: There are also lots of breeders that don’t actually keep all the dogs on their own property. It’s common for a breeder to co-own a dog that they can use for breeding, but that is kept by the other co-owner.

There are also some breeders who have partners, so that they both use the same kennel name and share the same dogs, but often live in different cities.

What you’ve described (80 dogs a year) is a puppy mill.

I believe that people breed more because it’s a passion and they really love the breed, not to make money
Breeding costs a lot of money first of all-
OFA X-rays
Cardiac testing
CERF eye testing
PennHip
Brucellosis testing
Food
Vaccines
Vet Exams
Ultrasounds
X-rays
C-sections
Sometimes- breed assistance/artificial insemination
Show expenses(some not all breeders add this)

Edit: Most reputable breeders have no more than 3 litters a year.

They have a farm, staff usually and spend their lives dedicated to their animals so that they build a reputation that people will go to them for dogs.

Few breeders make a lot of money. It is a 24/7 job and you have to love, Love, LOVE what you do to make it worth while.
