They need to have a vet reference and demonstrate that they will be coachable about the situation. It really depends on the dog.
This may seem over the top but an animal rescue group has got the interests of the dog in mind, and if that’s inconvenient to the potential adopters, then they don’t get the dog.

The animals are temperment tested in shelters before being adopted. And in most cases, the animals have resided in foster homes where they have been exposed and lived with so problems would be found then.

If the people know a lot about the breed, and are responsible, will shelters/breeders let them be adopted?

It’s much more expensive to buy one from a “breeder” and pay for the spay/neuter yourself, all the shots, etc. The shots are taken care of at the shelter.

However, many reptile breeders have such large facilities they have to hire people (in the dog/cat world this would be called a puppy/kitten mill) just to get work done. They’re kept in pretty small tanks, some even without hides. Can someone please explain this?

40% of dogs and cats euthanized in shelters every year are PURE BREDS. This is why I do not understand why there are NOT strict laws and regulations regarding breeding. There should only be a certain amount of breeders per state per breed. These people and their facilites should be properly investigated and licenced before becoming one of the “chosen ones”(per-se).

And anyone who is found breeding without a licence should be penalized. The homeless pet population is unacceptable and people who encourage breeders by “buying” their animals, are just contributing to the death of inoccent ones in shelters/rescues.

A perfectly healthy, lovable, young dog is being murdered as we speak just because he couldn’t find a home and breeders think it is ok to bring more and more animals into this world. What can you do to help the homeless/euthanized animal population?
To make a clarification I also helped in a shelter not for very long because I was a basket case everday. In just a few months I saw MANY pure breds murdered. Also, in reponse to the remark that dogs are being sent to other states because there is a shortage, that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard…I think you may need to get your facts straight.
Some people are not understanding what I am saying… THERE ARE TOO MANY BREEDERS(including “legitimate breeders”)! There NEEDS to be a certain number of licenced breeders per state/ per A PARTICULAR BREED and the people who “buy” these puppies/kittens should be mandated to sterlize them. Also, a mutt can not help if it is a mutt they are just as cute and lovable as any pure bred and most the time are in better health.

I would also like to know what these breeder enthusiasts think about particular breed rescues. Don’t even try to tell me that breeding is just fine with these “breed specific” rescues are busting at the seams.

The breeder supporters support it simply because they can “buy” a certain animal when and where they want to (instant gratification) instead of finding a truly needy pet that is waiting on death row at a shelter.
